<동심 어린 낙서>

<Scribbles of Childlike Innocence>

My artistic journey began with the Colored Pencil Airship, a symbol of childhood memories and innocence. As the colored pencil traveled across the sky within my paintings, it gave rise to the series In Search of Childhood Innocence and Flight of Innocence. Reflecting on memory and the traces left behind, this journey naturally evolved into the Childlike Scribbles series, inspired by the spontaneous marks of a child's drawings.

I draw memories through lines that resemble a child's scribbles.

A scribble is not a drawing made to depict something accurately. It is a gesture of wanting to hold onto a moment worth remembering—a way of letting something fleeting remain, even if only for a little while. A child does not scribble to explain meaning. They simply leave marks because they want to linger a little longer on what they love. That pure instinct is where my work begins.

The time of childhood has not disappeared; it remains quietly somewhere within us. Like a worn-down crayon that has become short with use, those memories may have grown smaller, yet they are deeply infused with the colors of emotions and experiences accumulated over time. Old memories can always be revisited. By tracing the lines of those days, I add new traces to the canvas of the present.

The crayons and colored pencils that appear in my paintings symbolize childhood memories and innocence, while paint represents the time of adulthood—the life I live today. Rather than separating the past from the present, these different materials reveal two different times coexisting within a single person. On the canvas, childhood scribbles and the emotions of today reflect one another, gradually forming a single landscape.

The crayons left on the surface are fragments of memories that have endured the passage of time—traces of a childlike heart that continues to live within me. Time constantly moves us forward, yet the traces of that younger self remain somewhere within us, shaping who we are today.

In my recent work, scribbles become landscapes. They may transform into flowers, hearts, or sometimes remain as lines that resemble nothing at all. What matters is not their form, but the memories they carry. Just as a child freely leaves marks across a sheet of paper, I transfer memories and emotions onto the canvas in their purest form.

The series <Time That Never> Withers grew from this ongoing exploration. The canvas becomes a world where time no longer passes—a place where flowers never fade and the heart never wither. Beautiful moments that cannot be held onto in reality remain in the form of scribbles, gently pausing time that can never truly last forever.

In the end, a scribble is the purest trace we leave in an attempt to hold onto passing time. The feelings we do not want to lose become lines, and those lines travel through time, becoming new memories. I hope these traces remain as a landscape of the heart that never withers. And so, today, I continue to draw my scribbles.
